It is widely regarded that changing tax policy was a key element in reducing seniors' poverty in Canada. In this paper presented at Carleton University's Institute for Political Economy(link is external), Tax Fairness Executive Director Dennis Howlett outlines how tax policy can increase democratic engagement, reduce poverty and strengthen communities.
Politicians, often patronizingly, like to talk about how drawing up a country's budget is similar to the process for a family budget. We think that is a stretch. But for the sake of this article we will roll with it.
