A monthly tax justice roundup from Canadians for Tax Fairness

‘Tis the season (tax season, that is)

To everything, there is a season, and we had a busy tax season this year. While we sometimes have to direct those asking us personal tax questions to their nearest community tax clinic, we were excited to put a policy lens on tax time this spring with a new report. If you haven’t already taken a look at A tale of two tax seasons, you can check it out here.

In other C4TF news, we teamed up with our favourite good rich folks, Patriotic Millionaires Canada, to spread the word about one of their members, Emma Davis, who is overpaying her taxes by $1 million this year to highlight how unfair our tax system is. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! Check out her op-ed in the Star here.

Carney’s fuel tax pause rewards polluters

It’s bad enough that $90 billion in excess oil profits will go untaxed. But now the government is doubling down with another giveaway to Big Oil—with no guarantee that any savings will be passed on to consumers. Silas answers our most pressing questions, including: WTF?

Progressive tax policy in… the Globe’s Report on Business?

We were pleased to see our recent report on tax havens featured (again) in the glossy pages of The Globe and Mail’s April Report on Business magazine. Skip past the Rolex ads for a slick graphic highlighting the obscene wealth mega-corporations and the ultra-wealthy have stashed in tax havens.

Canada needs a windfall tax on oil industry war profiteering

Hadrian Mertins-Kirkwood of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) adds to the growing chorus calling for a swift end to the illegal war in Iran, a windfall tax on oil industry war profiteering, and reducing our dependence on oil. Hey, a kid can dream!

The oil industry is making billions from the Iran war—it should be taxed

Backing up their dream with cold, hard facts, the CCPA dives deeper into the numbers (including ours) on why a windfall tax is a must to curb war profiteering and put profits back into Canadian coffers.

Canadian 'mastermind' in Panama Papers is still a free man despite criminal charges

Vancouver ‘businessman’ Fred Sharp is an indicted fraudster who has been ordered to pay over $70 million to the U.S. government and $2 million to Quebec for his schemes to manipulate share prices. He's banned from Canada’s stock markets. So why has he never been charged under Canadian law?

Five EU countries call for a windfall tax on energy companies

The finance ministers of Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria made a joint call for an EU-wide windfall tax. The aim? “To send a clear message that those who profit from the consequences of the war must do their part to ease the burden on the general public." We'll have what they're having, please!
