OTTAWA—This morning the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives released its annual Alternative Federal Budget (AFB). It is a thoughtful document that clearly shows that so called "austerity" measures from the federal government could further stall an already sputtering economy.
The inspiring thing about the AFB is that it shows, with careful research, how there are alternative plans that can strengthen the economy, improve quality of life and eliminate the deficit by 2016.
C4TF Executive Director Dennis Howlett worked with economist
Toby Sanger and others on the detailed chapter that deals with tax policy. It
proposes measures that
- close the biggest tax loopholes
- create a new personal income tax bracket
- introduce inheritance tax on estates over $5million
